"Lasers and Periodontics: Hype and Facts"

Course Synopsis
The presentation will cover the various laser wavelengths currently available to dentistry and their specific effects on oral soft and hard tissues. The concept of evidence based decision making and how it applies to lasers and periodontal therapy will be discussed. The applications and limitations of laser periodontal therapy will be presented and the published evidence both in support of and not supporting such therapy will be addressed. Other areas of interest will include a discussion of the laser mediated "flapless" esthetic crown lengthening technique; and the problems associated with unethical and exaggerated claims in the marketing and advertising of laser periodontal therapy.

Biography
Dr. Charles Cobb graduated from the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC), School of Dentistry in 1964. He received a Certificate of Speciality in Periodontics and a Master of Science degree in Microbiology, both from UMKC in 1966. Following two years of active duty with the U.S. Navy, Dr. Cobb returned to school at Georgetown University, graduating in 1971 with a Ph.D. in Microanatomy and Cell Biology. After graduation from Georgetown, he held teaching and research positions at Louisiana State University and the University of Alabama in Birmingham. In addition to teaching/research, Dr. Cobb has experienced 15 years of full-time private practice in periodontics. He recently retired from academics as Professor Emeritus at UMKC. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology, has published over 165 peer-review articles and presented over 120 programs at regional, national and international meetings. Lastly, Dr. Cobb retired from the U.S. Army Reserves with the rank of Colonel and is one of the few Reservists to have received the "A" Specialty Designator from the Office of the U.S. Army Surgeon General and induction into the Order of Military Medical Merit.
