To apply to dental school, one must first complete an accredited 4-year bachelor degree program. Many students who plan to pursue Dentistry as a career choose to major in a science-related field to meet the science requirements for admittance into dental school. Upon graduating with an undergraduate degree, students must take the Dental Admissions Test (DAT).
Dental school generally lasts four years and leads to a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DDM) degree. The first two years are dedicated to classroom study and lab projects. In the final two years of the program, candidates gain clinical experience under the supervision of practicing dentists. Graduates must pass required state examinations to be certified to practice as Dentists.
